In Falsus is the new rhythm × card × visual-novel hybrid from lowiro, the studio behind Arcaea. The full game releases on Steam on September 9, 2026, but a free demo is available right now. This guide walks through everything the demo offers and how to get the most out of it before launch.
What's in the demo
The demo (Steam App ID 4355100) includes:
- A slice of the story scenario introducing the five protagonists
- A set of playable Encounters (the rhythm stages) across all four difficulties
- The full card integration loop — collecting Iota, filling Blueprints, and selecting Traits
- The settings menu, including full key remapping
Progress systems are self-contained; treat the demo as a training ground for the mechanics that will matter at launch.
Songs, unlocks & progression
How the demo's progression flows, as observed in demo v0.3.x:
| Stage | What unlocks | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Story intro | First playable Encounter | The scenario sections gate your first dive |
| First clears | Song select access | All 5 demo songs become selectable — including 3 originals |
| Per song | MIN / EVO / ULT, plus FBD (3+1 difficulties) | Difficulty is freely selectable per chart |
| Card tutorial | Iota + Blueprint interface | The integration loop opens after your first Encounter results |
Two things worth knowing: nothing here requires an account or an online connection, and every song can be replayed freely to farm Iota — the Farming Planner estimates how many qualifying clears each target card costs.
Step 1 — Fix your keybinds first
The default layout is LShift / A / S / D / F / Space, which strains the pinky for most players. Before you play a single Encounter, open Settings and remap to something that matches your hand position. This is the single highest-impact change you can make.
Step 2 — Pick the right difficulty
In Falsus has four difficulties, and they change how many keys you use:
| Difficulty | Keys | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| MIN (Minimal) | 4K | Static finger placement — start here |
| EVO (Evolved) | 5K | Active lanes may switch mid-song |
| ULT (Ultimate) | 6K | Requires moving three fingers flexibly |
| FBD (Forbidden) | 6K+ | Adds wide notes — the hardest challenge |
Start on MIN even if you're a rhythm-game veteran: the mouse-based FIELD and FLICK notes are unique to In Falsus and take real practice.
Step 3 — Learn the four note types
- TAP — press the matching key. In FBD, wide notes span multiple lanes and any covered key triggers them.
- HOLD — keep the key held. There's no release timing to judge, and in FBD you can transfer between keys mid-hold.
- FIELD — a mouse note: keep your cursor inside the purple zone. If the cursor strays too long it turns red and briefly goes inactive.
- FLICK — flick the mouse left (yellow) or right (green). The motion only needs to overlap the note's horizontal span, not cover its full length.
The mouse notes are the demo's real skill check. Practice small continuous cursor movements for FIELD sections instead of large sweeps.
Step 4 — Clear your first Encounter
Each Encounter plays out in Phases against an opposing card. Two systems drive your result:
- Judgments — EXACT > NEAR > BREAK. Your accuracy feeds both your score and your damage.
- Resonance Gauge — resets every Phase; once full, all damage is multiplied ×5 for the rest of that Phase. Only EXACTs fill it, so land your EXACTs early in each Phase to open the burst window sooner.
Aim for Connected + Dive Clear or better — that's the threshold for Iota drops.
Step 5 — Run the card loop
After clearing Encounters you'll collect Iota — each Encounter has a fixed drop pool, typically 12 kinds (4 colors × 3 shapes) of a single Tier. Place them on a hexagonal Blueprint grid, fill its colored Zones to unlock base stats, then pick Traits for special abilities. Watch out for the four penalties — Overload, Out of Bounds, Overlap, and Disconnect — since just one penalty cuts your card's stats to 89%, two to 56%, and three or more to zero.
