If the In Falsus demo won't launch at all — crash, freeze, or hang with no audio — the fix path is different from the classic "black screen with music" case. Start with Alt+Enter and the black screen guide if you hear audio but see nothing. Otherwise, work through the steps below in order.

Fix 1 — Verify Steam game files

  1. Right-click In Falsus Demo in Steam
  2. Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files
  3. Relaunch after any re-downloads complete

Partial installs are the most common cause of hard crashes on first launch.

Fix 2 — Lower your audio sample rate

Several ProtonDB reports tie launch failures to Windows output above 96 kHz (e.g. 32-bit / 384 kHz):

  1. Settings → System → Sound → your output device → Properties
  2. Advanced → set format to 24-bit, 96000 Hz (or 48000 Hz)
  3. Restart and launch the demo

This also helps when the game starts but intro video/background images fail to load.

Fix 3 — Update GPU drivers and disable overlays

  • Update NVIDIA / AMD / Intel drivers, then reboot
  • Disable Steam overlay for the demo (Properties → General)
  • Close Discord, MSI Afterburner, and GeForce Experience overlays — injection hooks break rhythm games

Fix 4 — Check minimum specs

64-bit Windows 10+, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 11 GPU. There is no native macOS build. Linux and Steam Deck rely on Proton.

Fix 5 — Steam Deck and Linux (Proton)

The demo runs on Deck with tinkering — not officially supported:

  1. Install ProtonUp-Qt in Desktop Mode and add GE-Proton 10-32 or 11-1
  2. Game Properties → Compatibility → force that Proton build
  3. Use keyboard + mouse; Field notes need a pointer (touchpad or gyro — see Steam Deck guide)

Missing intro images/video often clear up after switching from stock Proton to GE-Proton.

Still stuck?

Post on the Steam discussion board with your GPU, Windows version, and whether you're on Deck/Proton. lowiro has shipped multiple demo patches (currently v0.3.x).
