In Falsus Black Screen Fix (Demo): Alt+Enter First, Then These 5 Steps

In Falsus demo won't launch or shows a black screen with music? Press Alt+Enter first — then work through GPU drivers, multi-monitor, Steam file verification and minimum specs in order.

You launch the In Falsus demo, the music starts playing — and the screen stays black. First move: press Alt + Enter. In most reports the game is already running; only the fullscreen handoff failed. This guide walks through every fix in order when Alt+Enter alone is not enough.

Fix 1: Press Alt + Enter (works for most people)

If you hear music but see nothing, the game is running — the fullscreen handoff failed. Press Alt + Enter to toggle between fullscreen and windowed mode. This is the fix lowiro themselves have pointed players to, and it resolves the majority of black-screen reports.

If the picture comes back in windowed mode, set the game to borderless / windowed in the graphics settings so it doesn't happen on the next launch.

Fix 2: Update your GPU drivers

In Falsus runs on DirectX 11. An outdated graphics driver is the usual cause when Alt+Enter doesn't help:

  1. NVIDIA: GeForce Experience → Drivers → Download, or nvidia.com/drivers
  2. AMD: AMD Software Adrenalin → Check for updates
  3. Intel: Intel Driver & Support Assistant

Restart after installing, then launch the demo again.

Fix 3: Disconnect the second monitor

Multi-monitor setups confuse fullscreen games more often than you'd think — the game can render fullscreen on a display that's off or asleep. Unplug (or disable with Win + P) every display except your main one, launch the game, and re-enable them afterwards.

Related: if Windows display scaling is above 100%, try setting the game's executable to override high-DPI scaling (right-click the exe → Properties → Compatibility → Change high DPI settings).

Fix 4: Verify the game files on Steam

A partially downloaded or corrupted install shows exactly these symptoms:

  1. Right-click In Falsus Demo in your Steam library
  2. Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files
  3. Let Steam re-download anything broken, then relaunch

Fix 5: Check the minimum specs

The demo needs a 64-bit Windows 10 or newer, 8 GB RAM and a GPU with DirectX 11 support. Older machines that fail one of these tend to produce a black screen with audio rather than a clean error message. There is no macOS build.

Fix 6: Linux, Steam Deck, and Proton

If you're on Linux or Steam Deck, black screens and missing intro images are common on stock Proton. Community fixes:

  1. Install GE-Proton 10-32 or 11-1 via ProtonUp-Qt and force it in game Properties → Compatibility
  2. Lower your audio output sample rate to 24-bit / 96 kHz (Windows-style audio settings in Desktop Mode)
  3. If video still fails, try Proton-CachyOS or install Windows Media Foundation via protontricks

Full Deck setup (gyro layouts, touchpad Field notes, performance): see the Steam Deck guide. Hard crash with no audio? Read demo won't launch instead.

Still black?

  • Close overlays (Discord, MSI Afterburner, GeForce overlay) — rhythm games and injection overlays don't mix.
  • Report it: the Steam discussion board has an active thread on black-screen launches, and lowiro has been shipping demo patches (the demo is already on v0.3.x).

FAQ

Why is In Falsus showing a black screen? Usually a failed fullscreen switch — Alt+Enter fixes it. Driver issues, extra monitors, corrupted files, and under-spec hardware are the next suspects.

Music plays but the screen is black — what now? Alt+Enter, then borderless/windowed mode in settings. That combination covers most demo players.

Is a black screen the same as the game not launching? Black screen with audio = almost always display mode. No audio at all = try file verification and drivers first.

Once you're in, the next hurdle is the unusual control scheme — see the controls guide, the beginner tips, the demo walkthrough, and the Blueprint guide. Planning your first card? Open the Iota Solver.
